A crypto wallet is a tool that stores the keys to your digital assets. The best one depends on what you hold and how you use it. Many people use two: a software wallet for everyday activity and a hardware wallet for long-term savings. This guide compares the leading options, including MetaMask, Ledger, Trezor, and ZenGo.
Every wallet compared here is self-custodial, meaning you hold the keys to your crypto rather than a company. If you are new to the terminology—Private Keys, Secret Recovery Phrase, software and hardware storage, custodial versus self-custodial—start with what is a crypto wallet, which covers the basics this guide assumes.
Disclaimer: This content is for educational purposes only. It is not financial advice, not a solicitation, and not for UK audiences. Crypto wallets and digital assets carry risk and are not suitable for all users.
Five factors were considered when comparing the best crypto wallets: key control, key generation, lock-in risk, distance from the internet, and real-world usability.
Who controls the keys. Only self-custodial wallets qualify. If a company can move your funds, it's an account, not a wallet, and belongs in a different guide.
How keys are created. Whether the wallet's key generation is transparent and independently checkable, rather than something you have to take on trust. This mattered more in 2026 than a year earlier, after the Coldcard seed-generation flaw was exploited.
Whether you're locked in. Support for the BIP-39 standard, the common Secret Recovery Phrase format, so your funds can be restored in a different app if the manufacturer ever shuts down.
How far keys sit from the internet. The less a key is exposed to the internet, the smaller its attack surface. Airgapped (fully offline) signing keeps the key off the internet, a USB hardware wallet connects only while plugged in, a phone app runs on an always-connected device, and a browser tab stays continuously online.
Whether people actually use it as intended. The most secure setup on paper does little good if it is too fiddly to keep up with. A simpler wallet used consistently protects more than a strict one left abandoned.
Note: Coldcard devices are excluded from this comparison following the seed-generation flaw and resulting hack, affecting more than $130 million in user funds as of August 6, 2026. Owners should read the advisory from Coinkite.

Software crypto wallet apps are typically free to install. However, each wallet has different transaction fees, so the exact same swap will cost different amounts depending on which app you choose. Some wallets display fees before you transact. For example, MetaMask shows estimated balance changes and the quoted output before you confirm, so all costs are clearly visible up front.
