How Collab.Land and MetaMask Are Paving the Way for New Transaction Primitives

At Collab.Land, we’re working on an approach that leverages MetaMask’s Delegation Toolkit to redefine how transactions are handled. Delegation using smart accounts offers enhanced flexibility and paves the way for blockchain and AI integration. By enabling partial access to accounts, it creates a secure system where AI agents can perform tasks on behalf of users without compromising account security.

Key concepts like credible commitments and programmable assets are at the heart of this evolution, driving the next wave of innovation. With fine-grained access control, we can precisely define the actions an agent or third party is authorized to perform, making interactions safer and more efficient.

This article explores how this works and what it means for communities, developers, and users.

Smart accounts: rethinking access control

Imagine how a computer allows multiple users to operate under different permission levels—admin rights, guest access, or roles somewhere in between. This concept is fundamental to managing control and security.

In crypto, smart accounts are bringing a similar level of flexibility. They enable precise, on-chain, enforceable delegations, granting others controlled access to our accounts without giving up full authority. This advancement makes credible commitments possible and empowers secure interactions fully aligned with our terms. For a deeper dive into credible commitments, check out this article.

With Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs), which lack granular permissions, we were stuck with an all-or-nothing trust model, making it difficult to achieve fully programmatic credible commitments. With smart accounts and the MetaMask Delegation Toolkit, we can achieve fine-grained access control. This breakthrough allows for fully programmatic credible commitments, enabling precise interactions without compromising security.

The intersection of crypto and AI: introducing RainDrops

The convergence of crypto and AI is not just a possibility—it’s an inevitability. AI agents, acting as assistants, will require partial access to accounts to execute tasks on behalf of users. MetaMask’s Delegation Toolkit, powered by the Delegation framework, provides the controlled programmatic account access that these agents need to function securely and efficiently.

Through a partnership with Lit Protocol, we’ve addressed the challenge of secure, programmatic key access. By integrating Lit Protocol with the Delegation Toolkit, we’ve laid the foundation for seamless AI integration in crypto transactions, unlocking new possibilities for automation and user convenience.

Additionally, we’ve launched a feature called “RainDrops,” which allows recipients to handle gas fees in transactions. This innovative feature introduces a pull-based model, moving away from the traditional push-based approach. With “RainDrops,” we’re redefining transaction mechanics to offer greater flexibility and a user-centric experience, setting a new standard for how transactions are handled in the crypto space.

Next steps

The future isn’t a distant concept—it’s unfolding now. With tools like MetaMask’s Delegation Toolkit and collaborations with innovators like Lit Protocol, we’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in web3.

For developers, community managers, and crypto enthusiasts, “RainDrops” introduces a transformative pull-based transaction model that empowers recipients to handle gas fees directly. This creates a smoother, more intuitive transaction experience, fundamentally enhancing community interactions and transaction mechanics.
