What a Bitcoin wallet actually holds

A Bitcoin wallet does not store bitcoin directly. It stores the Private Key that proves ownership of a Bitcoin address. MetaMask: top choice for holding BTC alongside other assets

MetaMask added native Bitcoin support in December 2025, which changes the options for anyone holding BTC alongside other assets. (As of August 2026, MetaMask supports every major blockchain network.) Before that, keeping bitcoin in a multichain wallet meant wrapped versions like WBTC, a third-party bridge, or a second app entirely. Now BTC can be held, bought, sent, received, and swapped on the Bitcoin network from the same wallet already used for Ethereum.

Setting up a self-custodial Bitcoin software wallet takes a few minutes. The process generally runs as follows:

  1. A crypto wallet app, like MetaMask, is downloaded from the official site or verified listing. Note: Always ensure any wallet is being downloaded or purchased from an official site. This step is critical. 

  2. The wallet is created.

  3. The Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) is written on a piece of paper or physical object. Passwords, Secret Recovery Phrases, and Private Keys should never be stored in a digital notes app, screenshot, or cloud drive.

  4. The SRP is confirmed and a device password set.

  5. The wallet produces a Bitcoin address, which can be shared to receive funds.
