Today we announced that Consensys Software Inc. is becoming two independent, focused companies. The company behind MetaMask will now operate exclusively as MetaMask, dedicated entirely to the consumer platform, and I will lead it as Chairman and CEO. Our protocols and institutional infrastructure business, including Linea, becomes a newly formed company that carries the Consensys name and its Ethereum mission forward, where I'll serve as Executive Chairman. One company is becoming two, so that each can pursue its market with the focus it now demands. Nothing changes for users of MetaMask today: your app, assets, keys, and access all remain unchanged and there is no action needed. What changes is our focus on what MetaMask can become.
Two missions, each come of age
When we started this work, both of our audiences were hypothetical. There were no mainstream consumers holding their own assets, and there were no financial institutions settling tokenized assets in production. We built for a future we believed in, and that future has arrived on both fronts at once, and the acceleration is tangible. Self-custody is becoming mainstream financial behavior. Stablecoins have become internet-native money connected to the real world.
Banks and asset managers have moved projects from pilot into production. The transformations taking place across consumer and institutional markets deserve focus: Consensys Incorporated will continue the institutional and protocol work with the depth it requires. Consensys will drive Ethereum technology growth via b2b and b2b2c activities, and will serve as an important channel partner for MetaMask.
MetaMask—fresh off its tenth anniversary, with more than 100 million downloads across roughly 190 countries and trillions of dollars in cumulative transaction volume—becomes a company whose whole reason for being is to enable you to directly control your financial life.
Open Money is here
MetaMask exists to unleash one paradigm shifting, disruptive technology: Open Money.
For most of history, money belonged to institutions rather than individuals. It moved through systems people didn't control, followed rules they didn't write, and waited for permission they had to ask for. While everything else on the internet became instant, borderless, and always on, money was held back: designed for a different era, conforming to an obsolete set of constraints and serving a different set of interests.
That era is ending. Money is becoming intrinsically digital. Not merely online, but native to the internet itself, built on open networks instead of closed institutions, and owned and controlled by the people who use it instead of the intermediaries who run and hold it. We call this Open Money: money that works like the internet—open, portable, agentic, and owned by you. This is your money, unleashed. Our mission is to make that real for everyone: to make money open.
What we're building is the operating system for that money. The one place to hold, move, grow, and use anything you own, on your terms. Unlike traditional banking, where your money sits in a vault serving others, this system keeps your assets under your full control, allowing them to work harder for you. With self-custody as the architectural bedrock of everything we ship, we’re building your personal money operating system: Money you control, on your terms, at all times. Money without borders, moving across chains and countries at internet speed. And money that works harder: yield, programmability, and access to the best financial tools the world has to offer—not just those that your bank or brokerage offers. Centuries in, this is finally Money of, by and for the people.
This is already underway. The MetaMask Money Account, which we launched recently, combines automated earning, instant spending, and one-click trading in a single self-custodial balance, and is the first expression of MetaMask as a full financial platform and everyday financial utility.
What changes for you
If you use MetaMask today, nothing about your app, your assets, or your access changes, and no action is required. MetaMask continues to connect you to the universe of tokens, DeFi protocols and high-quality networks while expanding toward the rapid proliferation of increasingly decentralized instruments of traditional finance. The fox still has your back—the same security model, battle-tested over ten years (unrivalled Lindy), backed by a company that is 100% focussed on making your money work better.
None of that changes. What you'll notice is momentum: in what we're building and how much more you can do with it.
For most of the last decade, we helped architect and build the rails of the onchain economy. Now the MetaMask Money Account brings the long promised financial agency on the credibly neutral Ethereum platform to everyone who wants their money open, under their control, and on their side. The MetaMask Money Account is the holy grail game changer we’ve been building for more than a decade. The era of increased personal sovereignty, powerful individual enablement and genuine personal financial agency begins now.
Consensys Software Inc. (CSI) is becoming two independent, focused companies. CSI continues as the same company, rebranded as MetaMask, operating the MetaMask platform and its consumer products. CSI's protocols and institutional infrastructure business, including Linea, becomes a newly formed company named Consensys. The two companies operate independently as of today, with the separation expected to complete by the end of 2026.
No. Your app, your assets, your keys, and your access are unchanged. No action is required.
Joe Lubin is Chairman and CEO of MetaMask. Consensys is led by CEO Mike Kriak and President David Cunningham, with Joe Lubin serving as Executive Chairman.
Linea, along with the protocols and enterprise infrastructure work (including Besu and Teku), continues under the new Consensys, which remains a steward of the Ethereum ecosystem.
Nothing changes about MetaMask's commitment to builders. SDKs, APIs, and developer tooling continue as before.
