MetaMask Embedded Wallets (formerly Web3Auth) employ advanced security including Multi-Party Computation (MPC) powered by Threshold Signature Scheme (TSS) and Shamir’s Secret Sharing (SSS). Your private keys are split and distributed in a network of nodes, ensuring the key is never stored in a single location and no individual party can access your funds. This architecture provides users with full self-custody.

Multi-Party Computation (MPC) is an advanced cryptographic technique that splits sensitive data (like a private key) into multiple encrypted shares, distributed across different devices or parties. No single party ever holds the full key, which eliminates single points of failure and significantly enhances security. Even if one share is compromised, your assets remain safe.

MetaMask Embedded Wallets implement MPC using both Threshold Signature Schemes (TSS) and Shamir’s Secret Sharing (SSS):

• SSS: The private key is split into several parts, and only a threshold number of shares are required to recover or use the key, providing secure backup and recovery options.

• TSS: Multiple parties jointly generate signatures without ever combining their key shares, so the private key is never fully exposed.

The MetaMask Embedded Wallet SDK features native smart wallets using the MetaMask Delegation Toolkit. This can be enabled directly through the Web3Auth Dashboard, allowing you to build feature-rich experiences with customizable permissions, gasless transactions, and streamlined user flows, available on any EVM chain that supports User Operation Bundlers.
