AVAX serves three functions on the Avalanche network. First, it pays transaction fees on the Primary Network—and unlike most blockchains, 100% of base fees paid in AVAX are permanently burned rather than distributed to validators. Second, AVAX secures the network through staking: validators must stake a minimum of 2,000 AVAX, while delegators can participate with as little as 25 AVAX, receiving annualized yields that adjust dynamically based on total staked supply. Third, AVAX functions as the unit of account across the Avalanche ecosystem, used to denominate transactions, validator requirements, and L1 deployment fees.

AVAX has a hard-capped maximum supply of 720 million tokens. Half—360 million—existed from day one, minted at the September 2020 launch. The other half enters circulation as staking rewards, paid out to validators and delegators on a declining schedule. The fee burn mechanism works in the opposite direction—every transaction fee permanently removes AVAX from supply. Whether the net effect is inflationary or deflationary depends on the balance between staking emissions and transaction volume. AVAX's current market cap is $2,770,917,379.

Avalanche isn't a single chain. The Primary Network consists of three specialized chains: the C-Chain (EVM smart contracts), the X-Chain (asset creation and transfer), and the P-Chain (validator coordination and staking). Beyond the Primary Network, teams can launch their own application-specific blockchains—originally called subnets, now called Avalanche L1s following the Avalanche9000 upgrade in late 2024.

That upgrade was the biggest set of changes the network has shipped since its 2020 launch. It dropped the validator cost for running a custom blockchain from a continuous 2,000 AVAX stake down to a flat monthly fee (starting at 1.33 AVAX per validator), and L1 operators no longer need to also validate Avalanche's Primary Network. The result is that institutional deployments (JPMorgan, Citi, and others have tested on Avalanche infrastructure), gaming chains, and purpose-built DeFi environments can each run on their own chain with their own rules while still connecting to the broader Avalanche ecosystem.
