How to buy crypto
Go from cash to crypto in a flash.
Dai (DAI) is a decentralized, US dollar-pegged stablecoin that aims to stay worth about $1. Unlike fiat-backed stablecoins such as USDC or USDT, no company holds cash reserves behind it. Instead, DAI is created when users lock crypto collateral into smart contracts called vaults. It's overcollateralized: each DAI is backed by more than a dollar of collateral, and positions are automatically liquidated if that buffer runs low. DAI is an ERC-20 token, minted and destroyed through the protocol's smart contracts rather than issued by a central authority.
It's maintained by Sky—the protocol formerly known as MakerDAO—through community governance, where holders of the SKY token (formerly MKR) vote on accepted collateral, rates, and other parameters.
In 2024, Sky introduced a successor stablecoin, USDS, that runs on the same system and converts with DAI 1:1 with no fee. DAI remains fully active, though several centralized exchanges have moved balances to USDS. See how DAI and USDS compare.
Holders can also earn on DAI through the DAI Savings Rate and its wrapped token sDAI—a variable rate set by Sky governance. DAI is widely used for payments, savings, trading, and across DeFi for lending, borrowing, and liquidity. It moves across Ethereum and other networks that support ERC-20 tokens.
